You just had to be there

2016 Edition

Before Reels, before soft launches, before everyone discovered neutral basics. A look back at 2016 through the Superette lens, equal parts iconic, chaotic and lovingly cringe.

2016 was a time. Not a simple time. Not a subtle time. But a time where outfits were louder, aesthetics were bolder, and nobody questioned whether a look was “too much”. It was about doing the most, backing it fully, and posting it anyway. Looking back now, it feels like a fever dream we all collectively agreed to enjoy.

There were styling moments that felt groundbreaking at the time and now live on as legends. Pieces layered with confidence, silhouettes that pushed boundaries, and outfits that only make sense when you remember the year they were worn. Iconic? Absolutely. Would we wear them again today? Maybe not without a deep breath and a sense of humour.

Behind the scenes, planning sessions were big, bold and full of ideas. The kind of meetings where everything felt possible and nothing was overthought. Whiteboards were busy, energy was high, and the future felt wide open. Those moments shaped so much of what Superette would grow into, even if at the time it just felt like organised chaos.

And then there were the parties. The Christmas parties especially! It was never just a celebration. It was an event. The kind that gets referenced years later with a laugh and a knowing look.

Some pieces deserve their own chapter in the history books. The Super tank is one of them. If you know, you know. It was everywhere, worn proudly, styled endlessly, and still remembered fondly today. A true icon of its era.

The Super team kept things lively as always. Never a dull moment, ever. Whether it was road trips, store openings or everyday office antics, there was always something happening. From hitting the streets of Christchurch for the store opening to stepping into the energy of NZFW for the Stolen Girlfriend Club show, it was all part of the ride.

Social feeds looked very different back then. Filters were heavier, captions were longer, and aesthetics were less curated but somehow more honest. It was a time of experimentation, growth and documenting everything. And honestly, we kind of love that about it.

Looking back at 2016 is a reminder that fashion and fun go hand in hand. That style evolves, taste matures, and memories become even better with time. So tell us, what was your iconic 2016 moment?
