Introducing:

Drake Street - Wild Fire

The second Drake Street collection takes the brand south. From the cold refinement of northern Italy to the gritty, sun-baked coastline of Sicily. Wildfires included. Drake Street Designer Ryan Foster tells us what inspired it and which pieces are worth knowing.

From Milan to Sicily

Burner Milano set Drake Street’s compass firmly in northern Italy. Cold, rich, and refined. Wild Fire picks that compass up and points it south. All the way to Sicily, where the light is different, the history runs deeper, and the landscape has a rawness that the north simply does not. For Ryan Foster, Drake Street’s menswear buyer, the shift was personal before it was ever a collection.

Ryan’s family is from Sicily. The trip that became the foundation of Wild Fire was a return to that, and it turned into something more memorable than planned when the family got caught in the island’s wildfires. That became the name. That became the core memory. And that particular combination of beauty and danger became the collection’s central reference point.

Sicily earns it. One of the most photographed coastlines in the Mediterranean, with cove beaches and ancient ruins sitting alongside a grit and complexity that the Instagram version never quite captures. The island has been shaped by centuries of different cultures passing through and leaving something behind. Greeks, Normans, Arabs, and Spanish, all layered across each other across thousands of years of history. The result is a place that feels unlike anywhere else in Europe. Stunning, chaotic, rich, and a little unpredictable. Wild Fire is that energy made into clothing.

The move from north to south also meant a shift in tone. Burner Milano was tailored and considered, carrying the polish of a northern Italian city. Wild Fire loosens things up. The south is warmer and grittier, water instead of mountains, linen instead of structured fabric. The collection follows that shift naturally.

What Ryan Would Wear

When it comes to what to actually buy from Wild Fire, Ryan does not hesitate. Three pieces from the October drop. One shirt he describes without qualification as the best fitting shirt ever. And two more that sit alongside it to form the complete summer kit.

The Vinny Relaxed Shirt is the first and the one he keeps coming back to.

“Just the best fitting shirt ever.”

The relaxed cut that earns that description is in how it sits. Not so oversized that it reads casual by default, not so structured that it asks to be tucked. A shirt that works from a Saturday morning through to something more considered in the evening without demanding a wardrobe change in between. In White it is the cleanest possible starting point for a summer wardrobe. The kind of piece that does its job so completely you stop thinking about it and just reach for it.

The Piero S/S Shirt in Concrete Check is the more directional pick. A subtle check that carries the texture and tonal quality of the Sicily reference without spelling it out. The kind of pattern that reads considered rather than busy, which is exactly where Drake Street lives. Worn open over a tee or buttoned up with the Corso Short underneath, it works across the full range of what a NZ summer asks a shirt to do.

The Corso Short in Espresso completes the three. A relaxed short in a warm brown colourway that sits naturally alongside every shirt in the collection. The Espresso tone has been one of the defining colours of the season and Drake Street’s version carries it in the easy, considered way that the brand consistently delivers. Put all three pieces together and the whole NZ summer is covered.

The Drake Street Difference

When Ryan talks about what he wanted Drake Street to be, he is equally clear about what he did not want it to be. The NZ and Australian mens market is full of brands reaching for the same reference point. That Ralph Lauren from the 90s energy, elevated and expensive and a little out of reach. Drake Street was never going to be that.

The brief was more pared back. Grittier. Something that carried a 90s sensibility without the pretension. An everyman wardrobe rather than an aspirational one. Classic menswear silhouettes in considered fabrics, designed to be worn and aged over time rather than kept pristine for the right occasion.

Sicily is the perfect metaphor for exactly that. One of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean, with a history and cultural richness that most destinations cannot touch, sitting alongside a grit and unpredictability that makes it genuinely different to the polished version of Italian style most brands reach for. Wild Fire is that balance made wearable. Familiar enough to pull on without thinking. Interesting enough to be worth thinking about.
