Our co-founder shares the story behind her new label and her vision for a modern wardrobe shaped by ease, proportion and longevity.
Behind the Seams: Rickie Dee on Herbert
For more than twenty years, Rickie Dee has bought, curated and built Superette into what it is today. Along the way, she has developed an instinct for the pieces women return to again and again. That instinct is the starting point for Herbert, her new label, available exclusively at Superette.
“Herbert grew out of Superette rather than away from it,” Rickie says. “Being in the business every day for more than twenty years, you get a real sense of what women are looking for, and lately it felt like there was space for a new label.”
Where Superette’s own label is brighter and more energised, Herbert is more toned back. “It’s about a quieter, more considered way of dressing: natural fabrics, proportion over trend, and clothes that feel better the more you wear them. Most women I know, myself included, want both.”
The Street She Grew Up On
Herbert is named after the street Rickie grew up on. “Most of my childhood was spent outside with my best friends and the neighbourhood kids, long days by the ocean, bare feet and nowhere to be. There was a slightly dodgy jetty at the end of our property, and that’s where we’d all hang out. It was easy and carefree, and that feeling has stayed with me ever since.”
She also loves the name itself. “It’s strong, a little bit ugly even, but with something really cool underneath. That contrast is very Herbert.”
That sense of ease shaped the first collection: fuss-free pieces that move with you through a busy day, with feminine shapes balanced against masculine ones. “Softness against structure, a relaxed shape with something sharper. Nothing too matched or too finished, just pieces that work together and feel like you.”
The First Collection
Rickie describes Herbert as raw, relaxed and modern, with a real sense of polish. It sits somewhere between undone and put together. The signatures are natural fibres, easy shapes that play oversized against fitted, and the Herbert monogram, used as both a quiet detail and a repeat print. The palette stays grounded in neutrals, with the odd pop of primary colour.
Twenty years of buying shaped every decision. “Buying teaches you very quickly what gets worn and what gets left behind. If it doesn’t earn its place, it doesn’t make the collection.”
Pieces to know include the Ridge blazer and matching mini skirt in a wool-blend pinstripe, long floaty skirts in cotton poplin, and outside seams and labels worn on the outside. Then there’s the Otto pant, a relaxed weekend pant based on a fisherman pant, in soft washed cotton. It was the first piece Rickie worked on. “I loved it so much that I ended up adding an eggshell colourway alongside the khaki. It works just as well with a flat as it does with a heel, and the way you tie the waistband completely changes the look.”
The Herbert Woman
“She’s more of an attitude,” Rickie says. “She already knows who she is and isn’t dressing to prove anything. Her days are full: work, family, friends, a last-minute dinner. She wants what she put on in the morning to still work at night.” Then she adds, “If I’m honest, there’s a lot of me in her too.”
As for how Herbert should feel the first time you wear it: “Like herself. Comfortable, put together and completely at ease. I want it to feel familiar straight away, like something she’s always had. If it brings back even a little of that easy, carefree feeling I grew up with, then I’ve done what I set out to do.”
Herbert is available exclusively at Superette, online and in stores.
