Meet the Rad Dads:
Pokaiaua Kurukaanga
Pokaiaua Kurukaanga, known to most as Chops, is spending his first Father's Day at the place that feels most like home. Northcote Rugby Club, North Harbour's finest, and the backdrop for a conversation about whānau, basics, and the one piece of advice he is actually going to use.
If you had to give your child advice about style, what would it be?
"Just keep an open mind. Whatever you think is cool at the time, just wear it, and wear it confidently. If you're confident in what you're wearing, you can pull anything off."
There is nowhere Chops would rather be for this than Northcote Rugby Club. The best rugby club in the North Harbour region, as he will tell you without hesitation, and the kind of place that says something about who he is before he has said a word. It is his first Father's Day and he is feeling it. Excited, a little overwhelmed by the questions, and already counting down to the whānau dinner that caps the evening off. His youngest brother has just become a dad too, which means this particular Father's Day carries something extra. Two brothers, a new generation, and a family table that is going to be full.
Fatherhood, he is quick to say, is one of those things that resists explanation until you are actually inside it. His mates who are fathers all told him the same thing and he did not fully believe them until it happened.
"You can't really explain what it's like until you're in it. But the sleepless nights are all worth it, bro. That's for sure."
What nobody warned him about quite as specifically was what it would do to his wardrobe. Before the baby, Chops wore loud. Colour, bold jackets, pieces that announced themselves. Since becoming a dad the volume has come down considerably and the edit has sharpened up. A sharp white tee. Black pants. Clean and considered. The statement pieces have not disappeared entirely, they have just relocated.
"I sort of let the shoes or a hat do a lot of the talking now."
It is a practical shift as much as a stylistic one. You get spewed on. Chill clothes make more sense. But there is something else in it too, a quiet confidence in simplicity that feels like it belongs to the same person who is learning to let the important things speak for themselves.
The best advice he received on becoming a dad came from the collective wisdom of everyone around him, filtered through a very Chops lens. Take it all in. Listen to everything. And then do whatever you want anyway.
"Take on what everyone says, really take it in, and then just do whatever you want anyway."
It is the same spirit he would pass on to his own child about style one day. Keep an open mind. Wear what feels cool in the moment. And above all, wear it with confidence. Because if you are genuinely confident in what you are wearing, you can pull anything off. Chops would know.
