Meet the Rad Dads:
Izak Holder
Izak Holder is a proud husband, father, and self-described wannabe pro golfer. He works for New Balance as a key account manager and will be the first to tell you he was already living the dad style long before Marlow arrived. We sat down with him to talk fatherhood, perception shifts, and doing your own thing.
If you had to give your child advice about style, what would it be?
"Clothing can be an expression of yourself. So let it be one. Just do what you want, man. Do whatever."
Izak Holder is exactly where you would expect to find him. Settled into a meeting room at New Balance, completely at ease, the kind of person who fills a space without trying to. His first Father's Day snuck up on him, he will admit that freely. In between the chaos of everything it fell by the wayside until this conversation brought it back into focus. It also happens to coincide with Marlow's first birthday, his daughter turning one on the 14th of September, which means the week ahead is carrying a lot of weight in the best possible way.
Fatherhood, he says, was something he thought he understood before it happened. He had a perception of it. A picture in his head of what it would mean and how it would feel. Then Marlow was in his arms and the picture changed completely.
"Things that you used to think mattered just don't matter anymore. There's this little human that's more important. And that's the thing you're worried about the whole time."
The shift is not dramatic in the way people sometimes describe it. It is quieter than that. The things that used to sit at the centre of his world are still there. They are still important. They have just moved slightly to make room for something that matters more. That reordering, he says, is the biggest thing fatherhood has given him.
On the question of whether becoming a dad changed his style, Izak does not hesitate. It did not. He was already there. New Balance is, after all, the home of the dad shoe, and he had been leaning into that energy long before Marlow arrived. He also makes the point that dad style itself has shifted. People his age are not dressing like their parents did. They are keeping up, chasing what the Gen Zs are wearing, staying in the conversation. The label has changed more than the clothes.
The best advice he received from another dad was not about sleep schedules or feeding routines. It was simpler and more practical than any of that.
"Do the dishes and make sure the washing's done. Do what you can on the outside because that's what's important to keep mum and baby right."
Does he follow through on it every time? Maybe sometimes, maybe not. But he knows it is right. Beyond that, his broader advice on navigating the avalanche of opinions that arrives with a newborn is exactly what you would expect from someone who has always done things his own way. Listen to everything. Take it all with a grain of salt. And then just do your own thing.
It is the same advice he would give Marlow about style one day. Expression is more accepted now than it has ever been. Wear what feels like you and wear it without apology.
