Polo Ralph Lauren Spotlight:
Luke Jacomb
We had the opportunity to step inside the studio of Glass Blower and Artist Luke Jacomb. We spoke about his journey, his style, and where Polo Ralph Lauren sits amongst it all.
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi, my name's Luke Jacomb. I'm based in Avondale, Auckland. I'm a glassblower. I've been doing that for about 35 years.
How did you first get into art and what drew you to making it your career?
So my dad was a glassblower. I grew up in Ponsonby and he started blowing glass here. I was born in 1977. When I was growing up, I thought that glass blowing was really, really whack. It wasn't until I got older that I realised that it was really cool. So buddies of mine like Matt Hall and Simon Ward, we went to work for my dad in the mid-90s and I fell in love with glass and I managed to travel all around the world and work in Murano, New York, Seattle, China, Japan, and um Australia. I love it. I get to do it every day with my friends. it's, yeah, it's just a really amazing thing to be able to do all the time. That's the dream.
What inspires your work the most right now?
I'm really inspired by Alembics, which were made by the Alchemists hundreds and hundreds of years ago. So what I'm making at the moment is sort of like these fantasy chemistry sets. It's kind of like Breaking Bad meets Harry Potter.
Can you walk us through a typical day in your studio?
So we get in here at about 8 o'clock in the morning. We set everything up. We turn all of the furnaces on. We have one furnace that runs 365 days of the year. So once we get everything up to about 1,100 degrees centigrade, we start blowing glass. um some days I'll go to the gym, some days I'll play tennis. So in the afternoon I kind of chill and in the morning we just work really hard making stuff.
Polo Ralph Lauren has always blurred the line between classic and modern. Do you see a similar balance in your own work?
Yeah, well one of the things that I really love about polo is that you can take a piece from like 1987 or 1992 and match it with something that's made in 2025. So it's really versatile in the sense that it's cohesive and it's coherent, so everything sort of matches together. So what I try and do with my own work is a similar principle where I'll work off the old principles, bring in old lines and merge them with new lines, but try and keep everything cohesive and coherent, kind of like what Polo has done.
Does your personal style influence the way you create art?
I'm really really into colours and patterns. So my style that I wear with polo is a lot of patterns and a lot of colour and they kind of traverse along each other's lines so yeah really does.
If you had to describe your style in three words what would they be?
Bold, unique and dope.
What's a look that carries you from day to night or outfit?
Oh wow that's uh a good question. Well, one of the things I love about polo is that it does cross over. So you can wear, um let's say like a snow beach jacket and you can go skiing in the Alps and then on the same night you could go down to I don’t know the French Riviera or something and go to like a Raekwon concert and wear the same jacket to a hip-hop show.
Polo's been worn by everyone from prep icons to street style legends. Which side do you relate to more or are you somewhere in between?
I'm somewhere in between but I definitely relate to the whole hip-hop culture with Polo. uh Me and my crew have been wearing Polo since the 80s so it's like 40 years now that we've been wearing it. But I really, really hit home when Wu-Tang started wearing polo in the 90s when the 36 Chambers album came out in 93 And then there's been a lot of other dope artists that have worn stuff, I mean, you've got people like Action Bronson and Nas. So it's been a huge influence on me, the street culture that's come out in New York. And I was lucky to live in New York for five years and hang out with a bunch of those guys too.
Oh well that’s it! Thanks for having us and sitting down with us for this!
Sweet!
