People of Carhartt:
Simon Lewis Wards
We had the chance to step inside the colourful, nostalgia-fuelled world of Simon Lewis Wards, an artist, sculptor, and all-round creative force. Among resin and glass sculptures of iconic Kiwiana references, we caught up with Simon in his Auckland studio and self proclaimed dream space to talk creativity, community, and how Carhartt fits into the everyday uniform of a working artist.
So firstly, who are you and what do you do?
My name's Simon Lewis-Wards. I'm a sculptor, artist based in Tamaki Makaurau, in the 'Waitaks'.
How would you describe your style, both in what you wear and how you move throughout the world?
Me and my buddies have been kind of writing graffiti since we were, I don't know, 14, 15. So I guess maybe a hip hop aesthetic, which kind of maybe wasn't so popular back when we were… starting to dress in baggy jeans and Carhartt and all the rest of it but has kind of become a bit more pop culture, mainstream these days so yeah.
Does what you do influence your style?
I think my style more influences what I do and um… The more I kind of progress in my practice, you know, to start with, I was kind of going out in the environment and kind of making things from my world. And now I'm starting to try and incorporate my kind of aesthetic or specific, personal style more into my artwork.
Is there anywhere you draw inspiration from day to day?
Yeah, everywhere. The first artworks that I made were these telegraph poles. Like I mentioned, me and my buddies started off writing graffiti, that was my first kind of creative outlet and practice. And, you know, that was a bit too on the nose as far as making sculptures. I thought that would be kind of corny. So yeah, I still wanted to do something that was kind of street orientated. Yeah. Like I said, I just went out and I was like, "what's on the street?" There's power poles, manhole covers, just looking around the world for inspiration, and even the glass candy side of my practice, it's all from outside influences and kind of looking at iconic stuff or nostalgic stuff, yeah!
Who or what around you has shaped your outlook the most? Is that friends you would graffiti write with, is it that kind of crowd that you'd be around? Or is it more a mix of the world like you just spoke of?
You mean like my personal style?
Just how you approach anything. So not necessarily style but how you approach a sculpture, your process or how you like dressing yourself each day, is there a single thread that ties it all together? And is there someone or a group of people that's influenced that?
Yeah, it sounds kind of a bit corny to say, but I think I haven't really, since I started like having a personal style or like way to be in the world. It hasn't changed a lot since I was probably 15, which, you know, I think my folks or you know people kind of laugh at me, they'll be like, are you dressing like you used to? But I don't know if you find something that you like and that resonates with you and feels authentic, lean into it, rather than like following trends... and it's funny, you know, because of the cyclical nature of trends anyway. I think I've kind of been trendy once or twice for a few years over the... since I was 15 or whatever. So at the moment I kind of am. How long will it last? Haha Idon't know. Yeah.
Okay. So then off that what does Carhartt mean to you if anything?
It definitely means a lot to me actually. Ralph Lauren and Carhartt are probably the two biggest things in my wardrobe and have been since we, me and my buddies started getting hip hop magazines that had graffiti in them when we were younger. I keep on harkening back to those times but I draw a lot of inspiration from the work people were doing back then and like I said, you kind of find something that kind of crosses over between clothes that I can wear out in day to day life, go out to dinner, then come into the studio and still rock in the studio, it holds up and I can wash a bunch of times, I don't have to throw it away after five washes. Yeah, it means a lot to me and me and my friends.
That’s a perfect lay up. Some people wear carhartt to work and some wear it to make a statment, where do you sit on that spectrum? Or are you not even on that spectrum?
Yeah, yeah, haha, I'm not on that spectrum. I'm definitely on a few spectrums. But as far as the division between workwear and streetwear and even dresswear, I rock it all over those areas of my life. And I think Carhartt is awesome like that. It's built like that anyway.
Is there anything specific that resonates with you about Carhartt? is it the function, the feel, the fit or even like some part of the history that you mentioned? Or is it just kind of all encompassing?
I mentioned in my practice, I draw a lot from nostalgia and Carhartt probably overall as a brand has that nostalgic feel for me. Sorry, I forgot the question haha.
Is there anything specific that resonates with you about Carhartt? is it the function, the feel, or is it just kind of all encompassing?
Yeah, I think because I have always worn it as well as fitting me well, it just feels like part of my uniform. Yeah, it's part of my uniform and I don't know, like trends have gone kind of like through different iterations of being like big or small and Carhartt for me being a slightly kind of like bulkier guy has worked for that kind of when, you know, trends will kind of like get really skinny and I was like, I think I'll just keep on wearing my Carhartt. It kind of fits and sits nicely. Yeah.
What's one Carhartt piece you've worn into the ground and what made it so essential?
This jacket right here that I have in the studio and I literally just, I use it for glass blowing. When I pull these works out at like 760 degrees, tried like different, technical jackets and kind of space suits. And it turns out that the Carhartt stuff is the best shit at that kind of heat. And I don't know, the cool thing about Carhartt is it ages and looks more vintage. I like the look of it more and more. So I actually, think I've had this for maybe 12 years and it just gets better. Haven't had to throw it away. yeah bro.
Lucky last question. Is there a particular moment or memory that you associate with wearing Carhartt?
Uh, yeah, I wore, I wore a, Carhartt t-shirt on my wedding day. Yeah. I had like a suit made and with the Carhartt t-shirt underneath. yeah, that was, that was a bit of a biggie. Hah.
Thanks for inviting us in and showing us around and letting us see your world.
Pleasure, man. Yeah. Like I said, it's the first time I've been asked to talk or represent a brand that I really love. So it's been a pleasure. Thank you.
Thank you bro!
Cheers!
