Meet the Rad Dads:
Andrew Slane
Andrew Slane is one of the owners of Blink, a creative agency specialising in signage, printing, and graphic design. Father's Day snuck up on him this year. He is not complaining. We sat down with him to talk fatherhood, carefree style, and the one piece of advice he is definitely not passing on.
If you had to give your kids advice about style, what would it be?
"Trust your instinct. And trust your mother because she's got great style. In ten years time when you look back at those photos, it'll be coming back around anyway."
Andrew Slane came into this Father's Day weekend the way most good ones arrive. Unplanned and already in motion. A week away, back home, and then straight into Father's Day before he had time to register it was coming. A lucky, lucky dad by his own assessment. It is hard to argue with him.
He runs Blink, a creative agency built around signage, printing, and graphic design. The kind of work that rewards attention to detail and a clear point of view. Fatherhood, it turns out, operates on a completely different brief. Andrew grew up without a dad around, went to a school where plenty of other kids were in the same situation, and arrived at parenthood with very little reference point for what it would actually feel like.
"It was kind of like an unknown. But it's awesome."
That simplicity is not a deflection. It is the honest answer of someone who expected uncertainty and found something better on the other side of it. The kind of realisation that does not need dressing up to land.
What has changed since becoming a dad, at least according to his wife, is the wardrobe. He will be the first to admit it. The days of ironing a shirt and putting together something considered have given way to something considerably more pragmatic. Whatever he can find. Jeans worn twice in a row without apology. A feeling-based approach to getting dressed that prioritises ease over everything else.
"My wife would say I used to dress a lot nicer. But that's what a real dad vibe is. Just chuck those jeans on again, we can go two days in those."
The best piece of advice he ever received about fatherhood came from another dad early on. He asked if it gets easier. The answer was no, it gets harder. He thought the man was lying. Now he knows he was not. His response to this information is characteristically practical. He has decided not to pass it on. New dads, in his view, do not need to hear it. They will find out soon enough.
