Re-set Mornings:

Inside the Rigdens’ Routine

Part of our Re-set series, we sat down with James and Renee Rigden to uncover their morning rituals and small habits that help them start the day feeling grounded, energised, and ready to take on whatever comes next. From early workouts and mindful breakfasts to coffee, music, and a little family chaos, they share how consistency, movement, and simple routines can transform the everyday into something intentional. Read their interview below.

Good morning!

J&R: Morning. Morning.

How are you guys?

R: Good. Welcome. Come on in.
J: Good, thanks!

So walk us through your morning so far.

R: Well, the sun was shining today, and that was good.
J: Yeah, that’s a bonus in the morning. But it’s really just getting up at the same time and focusing on getting our daughter Sloane out the door.
R: And making sure she’s got a good lunch packed and she’s had breakfast. Not too much time on grooming.
J: Yeah, which means we can free up our time, get down to the beach, and get coffee underway. That’s the ideal.

Love it! So what does a good morning look like?

R: It’s kind of like opening the curtains and seeing what the day looks like. Is it going to be windy? That’s always the first thing we check.
J: You already know anyway. Haha, you’re the weather guru.
R: I like to know what’s coming. We’ve had such a mixed bag of weather lately. If it’s calm and sunny, it’s a massive bonus.
J: Yeah, then we’re straight down to the beach.
R: And we know we can sit there and take a moment before the day really kicks off. That’s the ideal start.
J: At the moment it’s in between school. One kid’s at school, the other still on holiday, so it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
R: Not much longer to go.

Okay. You’ve kind of already answered this, but what’s one small thing that helps you feel like yourself in the morning?

R: For me, it’s consistency and starting the day organised. Being prepared the night before takes away stress in the morning.
J: Yeah, that consistency. Getting out at the same time, following the same routine. For us, exercise in the morning is key. Coffee and a bit of movement help us get ready for the day.
R: What we do really depends on the weather.
J: Yeah, we try to have a moment to ourselves before the day officially starts. That’s the goal.

And when your energy’s feeling low, what do you do to reset yourself?

R: Starting the day with water is non-negotiable. Even if coffee is coming, water first. Then it’s figuring out whether early exercise will help or make fatigue worse. Usually, a workout never disappoints.
J: Endorphins help. There’s a workout, a sauna, or sometimes it’s just mood. Renee’s really good at getting the music going and kick-starting the day.
R: And we start the day either way.
J: It all contributes to a better mood to start the day.
R: Breakfast also matters. Protein and fibre help stabilise blood sugar and avoid peaks and troughs.

Love it. Where do you guys do your sauna?

R: Here! Haha.
J: Oh yeah, we've got one here.
R: It’s not the nicest outlook. It’s tucked around the corner, but it does the job.

Okay, I’m getting the vibe that you move first. Do you move first or ease into the day?

R: Definitely move first, ideally.
J: Yeah, ideally.
R: I’m a big believer in moving early. Motivation wanes as the day goes on. Late workouts are hard on your own, but if someone joins you, it’s easier. Afternoon workouts aren’t the norm for me.
J: Our favourite morning is running the rocks to Takapuna, grabbing a coffee halfway, then running home. It’s about two and a half kilometres there. A bit of sweat, a bit of coffee, all wrapped up in an hour.
R: That’s more of a weekend morning.

J: Do you guys want a coffee?

Oh no thanks, I don’t drink coffee. It makes me jittery and anxious.

J: Really?
R: Some people metabolise caffeine quickly and they're fine, and others metabolise it slowly, which can make you jittery and affect sleep.

Yes! If I had one, I wouldn’t sleep. Not my favourite drink aha.

R: Can you drink matcha?

I can, but I need to eat first. Yesterday I had matcha on an empty stomach and was jittery all day.

R: Yeah. Everyone’s different, which is good.

So, what’s a non-negotiable in the morning, even on hectic days?

R: A consistent start. Same wake-up time, breakfast with protein and fibre, water, and coffee. That’s my non-negotiable.

Is there a product or step that instantly makes you feel more put together?

R: I’m really loving the Raaie Vitamin C Morning Dew drops. They’re brightening, hydrating, and plumping. I’m on my second bottle and really enjoying it.

Quickfire. Coffee or matcha?

R: Coffee.
J: Coffee, but I’ve started having matcha in the afternoon after lunch for a little boost.
R: I like matcha too, but if I have to choose, it’s coffee.

Sunrise or sleep in?

R: Sunrise.
J: Sunrise, 100 percent.

Early workout or long walk?

R: Early workout.
J: Both, but if I had to choose, early workout. Endorphins.
R: It’s also about not going high intensity every day. That’s too much for me.

Silence or music?

R: Music.
J: Music.
R: It gets the vibes up in the morning. With the kids, sometimes it’s Disney, other times whatever’s on the radio. It’s good for the family mood.

Stretch or scroll in the early morning?

R: Stretch. Easy.
J: We try to keep the phone away until we get to work.
R: Not having the phone in the bedroom works really well. You have to get up to turn the alarm off, so there’s no snoozing.

Okay. Who’s up first?

J: Oooooh…
R: The alarm goes at the same time. It’s about 50/50.
J: Yeah.
R: James is the barista, so if he’s not up first, I’m nudging him. I need a coffee machine in action.

Are your morning routines pretty similar?

R: Yep.
J: Yeah, they’ve evolved over the last five years, especially with Renee’s studies. They’re more structured now.
R: Sometimes one of us goes earlier, sometimes the other. It depends on the day’s commitments.

What’s one funny thing you’ve picked up from each other?

J: Nothing too funny. We’re probably too serious. We’re always trying new things.
R: Like fasting or eating routines. Mornings have become more structured as life’s gotten busier.
J: The funniest part is trying to get the kids on board. They think we’re crazy.
R: Bay’s been having ketones lately.
J: Yeah, it’s all about ketones at the moment.

And the final one. What does a Re-set look like right now?

R: Getting back into routine after the holidays. Waking up at the same time, eating whole foods, focusing on protein and fibre, and moving our bodies, even if school hasn’t fully started yet.
J: Habits slip when you’re away, so getting back into structure is key. Sleeping well, eating well, reducing sugar, moving the body, and stocking the fridge with good food.

Thank you guys so much.

J&R: Thank you!
