Meet The Maker

Charlotte Baillie of One Of Others

We caught up with One Of Others Founder, Charlotte.

Australian-born brand creating effortless, archetype-driven pieces to build a versatile, seasonless wardrobe with contemporary sophistication.

When and how did One Of Others come about?

The (very) beginning of the concept came about during my final year of fashion design at uni. About a year ago I was freelancing but missing my own design process. I felt the gap for the product I wanted to create was there, so I took a leap and ONE OF OTHERS was born.

How would you describe the One Of Others customer?

A considered shopper with a focus on form and function. She gravitates to seasonless pieces which she can effortlessly incorporate within her existing wardrobe. Our customer touches on but isn’t driven by trends, instead looking for effortless pieces which will evolve with her.

Any advice you would give to someone thinking of starting a brand?

There will never be a perfect time, but you just have to start. Understand your market and identify your point of difference. Be prepared to go all in and learn everything about every aspect of the business. No one will ever understand the essence of your brand more than you.

What’s your design process and is there anything you do to help to get the ideas rolling?

I always start with fabrication. I am driven by how it will drape, how it will feel and perform on the body. I then look at the contrast of textures and shapes within a collection and what feels balanced. I always come back to wearability and transeasonality.I try (and often fail) to block out time to just be a designer and not get distracted by everything else happening in the business. Nothing disrupts ideation like jumping between admin and the creative.

What inspires your collections and aesthetic and how do you keep it relevant?

Everything and anything can be the starting point for a story within the collection, but I love people watching and street style imagery from all over the world. Every city has a character and it is interesting to see how people dress and put pieces together.

Some styles start simply by creating the piece I am missing in my own wardrobe. When I’m in development I always question how many ways could you style this garment? Would you reach for this time after time? One of the pillars of the brand is building a wardrobe, so I have to know each piece works back with styles from the current collection, seasons prior and foundational pieces our customer already owns. This keeps me grounded and also ensures the direction of the brand stays relevant to our customer and our values.

Do you have a favourite style that you’ve created over the years?

The Pallas Mini Dress. It was the first piece that I designed for ONE OF OTHERS and is everything I want in a mini dress. It encapsulates my aesthetic that began when I was still studying - I would drape everything on the stand with a focus on form and structure. I still incorporate this in my design process.

What is something not that many people know about you or your brand?

I think people might be surprised that day to day ONE OF OTHERS is just me. I have taken over our apartment with samples, range boards, spreadsheets and to do lists. I go to the warehouse to QC and count stock myself. Every customer care email or DM is from me. We’ve already grown so much so it won’t stay this way, but this has given me so much insight into our product and our customer which is informing how we evolve as a brand.

What has been the highlight of your brand/career to date?

The support the brand has received since we launched, it’s beyond what I imagined. And the feeling when I see someone in a ONE OF OTHERS piece. I don’t think I’ll ever lose that.

What are you listening to right now?

SZA’s latest album on repeat.

What are you watching at the moment?

I’m pretty boring and rewatching Friends for the hundredth time, it is my ultimate comfort show.

Describe your style in three words:

Uncomplicated, transeasonal, minimal

What’s your daily go-to outfit?

It starts with our denim. I spend months wear testing samples to perfect the fit and that becomes my uniform. I always reach for the Pallas Top and feel put together. I’ve also been loving some more foundational pieces we have coming this year which are so easy to throw on. I’m patiently waiting for the weather to cool down so I can add an oversized jacket or longline coat.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Never take advice from someone you wouldn’t trade places with. I’m a chronic over thinker and this reminds me to trust my gut and ignore the noise.

What’s one item everyone should have in their wardrobe?

The perfect denim jeans and the hero top that elevates them.

Where to from here, what’s next for One Of Others?

We are only just beginning, there’s so much more to come. I design collections almost a year in advance so I’m just excited to share the direction the brand is taking. The outerwear we have developed for Fall 25 is a category I’m dying to launch.
