FATHER'S DAY WITH

Jae Of Commoners

Meet Jae, Brand Owner and Director of Commoners. We caught up with him to chat all things from his day-to-day style to what being a dad means to him.

Tell us a little about yourself… what keeps you busy?

Now based in the Mount having moved here in 2020 from Auckland. My young family and I were looking for a change of pace post Covid and by chance an opportunely to open a second store presented itself in Mount Maunganui. This was a chance to move Commoners operations and retail to the Mount which was an exciting challenge. 4 years on and its been a great move. Between running a small business/brand, family and fitting in time for excises my weeks are pretty flat out!

Who are you a Dad to?

I have a daughter Dylan 11 years and a son Jude 8 years.

What’s your favourite thing about being a Dad?

I think for me my key thing is making sure i give my kids a stable home environment where they know their Dad will always make sure they are feed and have clean clothes and are safe. Its seems like an obvious thing being a parent but unfortunately so many kids grow up without a stable home environment.

Biggest lesson you’ve learnt being a dad?

I think a big one is your kids are not you so they might not want to do the things you enjoyed at the same age. Letting your kids find the things they love to do at their own pace and not pushing them into something they don’t want to do. This can also be frustrating but that is part of the learning.

Best piece of advice you would pass on to your kids?

I just really want my kids to have respect and good manners when it comes to teachers, coaches and my friends and family.

How would you describe your style?

I am probably the ideal archetype for Commoners, I tend to reach for simple, clean pieces with little to no branding. That said, i think silhouette is important so im looking for something utilitarian with an interesting twist on shape. Perhaps thats the volume or length for example. Lately Ive been enjoying mixing in outdoors influences through some technical footwear or Oakley Radar for example.

What are your top three favourite favourite pieces from your collection that’s currently available at Superette?

The piece i have been wearing the most lately is the Mens Oversized Chunky Knit Jumper. The other to go to ‘uniform’ pieces for me are the Mens Carpenter Pants & Mens Hemp/Cotton Tee (both arriving for the first time to Superette later this month).
