Meet the maker

Lydia of GIMME

We caught up with GIMME Founder and Designer, Lydia Kirkland.

"I deeply believe in the transformative power of accessories. Beyond elevating outfits, they can instantly lift your mood.

I want GIMME to be the first place you think of when it comes to putting the finishing touch on your outfit. Work look? GIMME. Date night?GIMME. Wedding guest? GIMME!"
- Lydia Kirkland

What inspires your collections and aesthetic and how do you keep it relevant?

It’s important that our pieces remain accessible – not only price-wise, but also style-wise. The GIMME customer wants something that is an easy addition to their outfit, not something that overtakes it.

Do you have a favourite style that you’ve created over the years?

This is like picking a favourite child! The Bisous Bracelet that was created in collaboration with the incredible Sophie Bell of Peppa Hart is absolutely up there! It’s so unique and like a big warm hug for your wrist.

What is something not that many people know about you or your brand

The brand had two other names before it was GIMME!

What has been the highlight of your brand/career to date?

Partnering with Superette is a huge, incredibly exciting milestone for GIMME. It’s our first step into the world of retail after being exclusively online, and we are beyond thrilled to be stocked in what is arguably NZ’s most iconic store!

What are you listening to right now?

I love a bit of Mamamia No Filter for my non-fiction fix, We Don’t Have Time For This for parenting LOLs and Marketing ATM for biz.

What are you watching at the moment?

Emily In Paris! I’m just a girl…

Describe your style in three words:

Dynamic. Comfortable. Simple.

What’s your daily go-to outfit (accessories and all)?

I recently had my colours done and it has been life-changing. I have so much more confidence getting dressed now that I understand what really suits me. At the moment, I’m loving a pair of baggy jeans or tailored pants with a cardi or blazer. Silver works best for my skin tone, so my accessories are all silver (this is after wearing gold for the last 20ish years)! I’m easily influenced by GIMME customers and right now, the Ally Earrings and Lisa Earrings are FLYING off the shelves, so I’ve been rotating between those two styles.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Control the controllables.

What accessory should every woman have in her collection?

This is HARD! Ok, I’m going to say the Lisa Earrings because they’re like getting 2-in-1. You can remove the Puffy Heart charm from the earring and just wear them as simple hoops too. Pay per wear, am I right?

Where to from here, what’s next for GIMME?

We’ve got LOTS of exciting things in the pipeline but nothing I can share just yet… watch this space.

When and how did GIMME come about?
The brand's journey began five years ago, though it looked quite different back then. Initially launched as a hair accessories brand, we started with handmade hair scarves and scrunchies handmade at a dining room table. Over time, we expanded into jewellery and collected a legion of very loyal GIMME girls, but it remained very much a side hustle. That was until February 2023—just before I went on maternity leave with my second child. It was then that I decided to grab the bull by the horns and really lean in. Cue: a brand relaunch, a lot of hustle and tremendous growth! While GIMME may look a little different to how it did in its earlier years, one thing has stayed the same; we want to give women pieces that not only elevate their style, but also boost their mood. Sounds a little woo-woo, but don’t underestimate what a cracking pair of earrings can do. I’m a staunch believer in the transformative power of accessories AND that they don’t need to cost a bomb.

How would you describe the GIMME customer?

The GIMME customer is someone who’s looking to add the finishing touch to their look. Whether it's dressing up for the office, rocking the mum-life uniform, slipping into a cute date night dress, or getting ready for a girls' lunch—I can promise there's a GIMME piece that'll give it that extra oomph.

Any advice you would give to someone thinking of starting a brand?

Without underestimating the sheer AMOUNT of work that goes into starting and running a brand, remember that perfection is the enemy of progress! If you’re passionate and you’ve got a product that people will love, go for it. There will be ebbs and flows, good days, bad days and a whole lot of “WTF am I doing” moments, but we’ve all been there – trust me. There’s no handbook, most lessons are learnt the hard way!

What’s your design process and is there anything you do to help to get the ideas rolling?

Call me selfish, but when I design pieces, they are often pieces that I know I’d really love to wear myself. Of course, I keep an eye on the market but also love taking inspiration from the past and injecting some modern energy into it. I also just love observing (my husband would call it staring!) – everyone I walk past, do a quick up and down just to take note of their jewels.

When inspiration strikes, I’ll start with a sketch (this could be on the back of a napkin or my son’s colouring pad) and share with my team who help bring the vision to life in a 3D computerised version. This is when made into a sample (which can take a couple of times to perfect and approve) before it gets the greenlight for production. It sounds easy, but the process can take months to get right.
